Australia’s arms amnesty program becomes a huge success

With the overwhelming response of the Australian citizens, the Australian arms amnesty program, which offers a short amnesty period of nearly three months for the citizens who are willing to surrender their firearms voluntarily, has become a huge success.

As per the International media report, the ambitious program was commenced on July 1 and it will end on September 30.

It is learned that so far, nearly twenty-six thousand firearms have been surrendered to the authorities by the Australian citizens.

The authorities believe that with this move they can contain the influx of illegal arms into their territory.

The country has, in the past, witnessed numerous terrible terrorist attacks.

The rise in the number of the terrorist attacks using the firearms have prompted the authorities to take a stiff stand against the firearms.

Those Australian citizens who are caught with the firearms outside the amnesty period will have to face a severe punishment of up to nearly fourteen-year imprisonment term or up to over two lakh US dollar fine.

Several intellectuals and political activists have welcomed the move taken by the Australian government.

A senior minister of the government has expressed happiness in the overwhelming response.
