German election highlights: Martin Schulz to represent SPD as it prepares to stand against Merkel’s CDU

Aimed at replacing the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, who is seeking a fourth consecutive victory, the SPD, Social Democrats, which is a partner of the Christian Democrats led collision government, is planning to field its most powerful leader, Martin Schulz, who is a former president of the European Parliament, as their candidate in the upcoming election, which is going to decide the future of Europe, European Union and Germany. While speaking to his supporters at a party meeting in Germany, the SPD’s candidate has assured that he would strongly fight against the populism, Euroscepticism and racism once he comes into the power. Mr. Schulz is very popular among his party members as well as German voters. Even though he is not as much influential as his opponent, the present German Chancellor, he can make a positive appeal among the voters. As the Germany is moving towards its election, it is an interesting fact that the incumbent Chancellor, who has been holding the position for years, is not facing an anti-incumbency threat. Many see this as a clear sign demonstrating how influential the chancellor is. Anyway, Merkel’s decision to cut down social welfare spending in order to boost the defence spending has invited flak. Some newspapers published in the neighbouring countries have compared Merkel with Adolf Hitler for her attitude and working style. Anyway, it is not sure that are these criticisms enough at this juncture to replace the strong leader who is acting as a powerful bonding force of the EU.
