Italy preparing for elections; Berlusconi’s centre-right alliance likely to emerge as winner

All political parties have expressed their confidence equally, as the political campaign for the Italian election has reached its final stage.

The Five Star Movement, the Democratic Party and the Northern League are the frontrunners of the elections.

As per the report, the anti-establishment movement, Five Star Movement, is likely to emerge as the biggest party of the Italian Parliament.

Political observers claim that though the Five Star Movement is likely to emerge as a single largest party, it is unlikely to rule the country.

They predict that tainted ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s centre-right alliance may emerge as the biggest alliance and may gain as much as votes which is required to form the government.

Even if Mr Berlusconi’s alliance wins, he may not be able to become the PM, as his conviction in a tax fraud case will prevent him from taking the top office at least until next year.

In the run-up to the election, all parties focussed their campaign to highlight the country’s prevailing issues such as unemployment and immigration. Some of them tried to give several assurances in these subjects.

The rise of the populist, anti-immigrant and anti-establishment movement, the Five Star Movement, is giving serious concerns to the European Union.

If Mr Berlusconi’s alliance emerges with a confident majority, the ex-PM is likely to nominate European Parliament President Antonio Tajani for the top post.
