It’s Official: Populist govt to rule Italy

Marking a sudden end to several months of uncertainty, the populist parties –the Five Star Movement and Northern League- have agreed to form a government.

The conflict of opinion with the Italian President over the populist parties’ choice of economic ministry was the last hindrance for the formation of the populist-led government.

When the populist parties decided to dilute their stand over the choice of economic minister, the issue naturally vanished and paved the way for the formation of a populist government.

Earlier, the populist parties tried to select Eurosceptic leader Paolo Savona for the post of finance minister or economic minister. But, President Sergio Mattarella rejected the proposal, citing the concerns shared by the business community in the country as well as across the Europe.

Anyway, if things go like this, independent leader Giuseppe Conte will become the Prime Minister of Italy and Northern League’s Matteo Salvini and Five Star Movement’s Luigi Di Maio will be inducted as the deputy Prime Ministers of the country.

Though at this moment it is not clear who all get the key positions in the ministry, there is clarity in one thing that the controversial leader, Paolo Savona, is expected to get a good position other than the finance portfolio in the new Italian government.

Can this government compete its term?
