Jane Austin gets a life sized statue.


Worlds first statue of Jane Austin was unveiled at Basingstoke, largest town in Southern coast county of England -Hampshire. Jane Austin is a universally known and acknowledged novelist. The stature was created by Sculptor Adam Roud marking a series of events part of the writers 200th death anniversary.  The only portrait of the author was a watercolour sketch which was drawn by her sister Cassandra, still hanging in the UK’’s National Portrait gallery in London.

Jane Austin has been a tremendous figure in the field of Literature. Her works have got the recognition around the world. Some of her novels like Emma, Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice has been accepted by people worldwide and has also been recorded as movies.

Local parliament member Maria Miller was quoted as “ I really wanted a lasting monument to Austen in our town centre. We can honour our most famous — really world renowned — resident and it does give us a chance to recognise women in public art. This is where she lived her life and it was the surroundings of Hampshire that inspired her novels. Its a hugely important moment for the town.”
