Malaysian politics: Royal pardon to be granted to Anwar Ibrahim

The newly elected Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has asserted that jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim would be granted a royal pardon and would be inducted at the helm of the government within two years.

The new PM, who came to power with the promise that he would release Mr Ibrahim and hand over power to the powerful leader whom Malaysians love and respect unconditionally despite his unjustifiable criminal history within two years, has informed the public that the Malaysian King has agreed to grand royal pardon to the convicted politician.

Once he receives the royal pardon, Mr Ibrahim is free to walk out of prison and take up any political position.

It was during Mr Mohamad’s previous regime that Mr Ibrahim was arrested for charges such as corruption and sodomy. Actually, these were several dramatic incidents before the incident. Mr Ibrahim was prime member of Mr Mohamad’s regime. The aforementioned arrest originally happened within days after he initiated an open revolt against the then government. Then, there were allegations that the arrest of Mr Ibrahim was politically motivated and the charges against him were falsely framed to disarm the emerging leader’s political reputation and, thus, strength.

Anyway, this time, the person, who was instrumental in pushing Mr Ibrahim towards a uncertain political exile, himself has paved the way for the popular leader’s powerful comeback.

Is this a story of the truth’s victory over false or the society’s failure over populism?
