South Africa: ANC to select Zuma’s successor soon

The African National Congress, whose top delegates have gathered in Johannesburg for a four-day high level conference, is likely to select the successor to embattled South African President Jacob Zuma, who is going to step down from the top post after the 2019 national election.

Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy president of the country, and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the ex-wife of the president, are the frontrunners of the ‘successor race’.

Most probably, the leader who finishes first in this race is going to get a chance to rule the country after the 2019 national election.

Mr Zuma, who is at present in a very bad state politically due to the existence of several corruption allegations against him, has urged all the party members to firmly unite behind the winner.

The political experts say that if Mr Ramaphosa fails to win the election he would most probably split away from the party along with his followers. They assert that such a political development may adversely affect the future of ANC, which has been ruling the country for last few decades.

South Africa is undergoing serious economic crisis. The political instability confuses the foreign investors, and thus may invite serious economic disasters in the country in the near future.

The SA government is the latest victim of political instability in the African region, after Zimbabwe and Kenya.
