Spanish withdraws arrest warrant against absconding Catalan leaders

The Spanish Supreme Court has withdrawn arrests, which were released against the former Catalan supremo and four other senior leader, who were the prime participants of the Catalonia regionalist movement.

The aforesaid movement, which was led by the top political personals including the chief officer of the Catalan ruling government, irrecoverably damaged the relation between the regional government and Spanish central government. Eventually, the political stand-off was smashed by the central government by unilaterally imposing a centralised administration in the region, when the regional government tried to declare independence denouncing the Spanish authorities, which termed the Catalonia referendum seeking independence unlawful.

Anyway, recently, as per the media report, the Catalonian leaders, including Carles Puigdemont, have communicated their decision to return to their country to surrender before the law from Belgium where they sought asylum immediately after the central administration’s takeover.

There were reports that the leaders of the regionalist movement, including those who fled the nation were charged with serious charges for sedition and rebellion against the state.

However, it is clear that the Spanish top court is not likely to withdraw the charges against those took part in the regionalist movement.

At this moment, it is not clear when will the absconding leaders return to the country to surrender before the court.
