Tension escalates in Maldives as opposition accuses ruling party of using military force for personal gains

The opposition parties and some members of the ruling party have accused the Maldivian President, Yameen Abdul Gayoom, of preventing the parliament members from entering the hall to dethrone the embattled speaker by locking the Parliament gates using the military force. Recently, the unsatisfied faction of the ruling party led by the president’s half-brother, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and the country’s strongman, Mohamed Nasheed, reached an alliance, putting the president’s future as the country’s supreme leader in the state of uncertainty. With the emergence of the alliance, the opposition has gained a clear advantage in the eighty-five member house. It is learned that the opposition has the support of nearly forty-five members in the house. The new political developments have severely weekend the ruling political party and its government. Observers claim that the opposition led by the first democratically elected supremo, Mr Nasheed, is trying to bring under control all the democratic institutions of the country, which are presently in favour of the ruling party. If the things are developing in this phase, very soon the ruling government and its supremo might step down. At this moment, it is not clear whether the military forces of the country are helping the ruling government. Observers assert that if the military intervenes in the political issue, it might lead the country to a political turmoil. Maldives has a bad history of military suppressions. Considering the geographical position of this country, any disturbance in this island will affect the entire region adversely.
