Vatican turns of fountains in awake of water Shortage across Italy

000e635e-800The holy city of Vatican that is known for its beautifully crafted fountains has decided to turn of its famous fountains for the first time as the acute water shortage triggers as a result of hot dry weather.  The city has around 100 decorative and drinking fountains which includes 2 antique 500 year old marble masterpiece in St. Peters Square.

With the hot summer months in progress, governments has decided to keep minimum of 85 fountains open out of the total 2500 drinking fountains spread across the city. The water is usually pumped in from the Lake Bracciano which is about 20 miles from Rome. But the officials have put a stop to it as it could risk the aquatic life as the possibility of lake getting dried up is high due to intensive pumping.

“The drought that is affecting the city of Rome and the surroundings areas of the capital has led the Holy See to take measures to save water. The Governorate of the Vatican City has decided to turn off all the fountains, both external ones located in the St. Peter’s Square, and the interior fountains including those in the Vatican Gardens.” quoted from the Vatican official website.
